With early access, parents will be able to approve or withdraw, and schools will be able to keep a record of consent for a child’s data.
A process every school should have ready
Schools handle children’s personal data. The DPDP Act treats anyone under 18 as a child, so every school should be ready to request and record verifiable parental consent when it is needed. For identifiable student photos or videos shared publicly or used for promotion, consent is the safe route. This includes Instagram posts and reels, other social media, the school website, event videos, toppers’ photos, and student pictures in school diaries or report cards when used for publicity. This is about the identifiable image, not the academic information in a report card. Publishing without a clear consent record can create legal and trust risks for the school.
Before sharing a child’s face publicly, check that the parent has agreed and keep proof. If consent is withdrawn, respect that choice. The limited education and safety exemption does not mean every school record needs consent.

DPDP consent, in plain English
The DPDP Act treats anyone under 18 as a child. Section 9 requires verifiable parental consent before processing a child’s personal data. The Rules give schools a limited exemption for education and safety purposes.
For photos and videos, school website or social posts, marketing, and sharing data with third parties, consent is the safe route. The school needs to know what a parent approved, keep proof, and respect a later withdrawal. This is a consent record tool, not a claim that every school record needs consent.
